What Is the Difference Between Skills And Knowledge And How Can You Create A Business Around Them?
Discover the difference between skills and knowledge and then how you can leverage them both to create an online business.
Hi Trish Davies, here from Build Your AU. As you go through life you gain vast knowledge and skills, everyday you learn something new or try different things. You are unique to the world and the value you have to offer is based upon your knowledge and skills.
That value can be then packaged up to create an online business. A business where you can share your knowledge and skills, make an impact on peoples lives, and generate revenue.
I personally love this type of business model, which I refer to as an authority business model. A business model that relates to the individual person based upon their knowledge and what their talents, gifts, and skills are.
My Build Your AU training programs are designed to help you create your own authority business model. I have a process that defines the knowledge you have and what your skills are. Then I help you piece everything together and attract the ideal customers to your business.
Sometimes it may be hard to differentiate between knowledge and skills. Therefore, I want to address the difference between skills and knowledge. Then give you some insights on how you can leverage them into an online business.
Difference Between Skills And Knowledge
When you look at skills and knowledge, they form two vital ingredients to measure your overall competence. That competence reflects all aspects of life from tying your shoelaces to building a city skyscraper.
When I talk about an authority business model it means drilling down on those skills and knowledge. By doing this you then become an expert in a specific field and that is the reason I created Build Your AU. To help you become the expert and go to person.
Apologies as I have digressed for a moment so let’s get back to the difference between skills and knowledge. This is not very complicated and can be summarised on what and how you learn things.
The Definition Of Knowledge
I referred to the Oxford English Dictionary for what I feel is a true definition of knowledge. It reads as follows –
“Facts, information, and skills acquired through experience or education, the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject”
When you look at knowledge it is theory based and refers to specific information given to a specific topic. You acquire knowledge from reading books, newspapers, magazines and from websites on the internet. Also, you acquire knowledge from what you are taught within your academic period of your life.
The Definition Of Skills
When it comes to skills, I referred back to the Oxford English Dictionary for a definition and it reads as follows –
“The ability to do something well, expertise”
When it comes to the skills you have it refers to implementing the theory in practice. Basically, taking action on theoretical information and performing your role to the best of your ability. Through repetition of practicing your skills you then begin to master them hence the saying “practice makes perfect”.
When you combine your knowledge, the implementation of your knowledge to develop your skills you gain experience. Eventually you become a master and when you translate into business terms you become an authority. A person who other people will look up to, follow and become influenced by.
How Can You Combine Your Skills & Knowledge Into A Business?
Now you have a clear understanding of the difference between skills and knowledge. The next step is to think how you can turn your knowledge and skills into a business. Therefore, you must complete and exercise to define what you know, what you are good at and your experience.
Take some time to write all of this information down in black and white. Have a list for your knowledge, the same for your skills and your talents. Another list of the experience you have acquired over the years.
This will give you a picture of the value you have and what you can offer to other people. It will become clear what challenges you have had in life, what obstacles you have overcome. How you faced those challenges and what you did to come out the other side. In other words, the solutions that you either created or found.
This is the information that you can share with other people. People who will ultimately become your audience and potential customers. So how can you share this information.
Formats For Sharing Your Skills & Knowledge
You can create a website/blog and publish information about your story through articles and blogs. This make your potential audience aware of who you are, what you have done and how you have done it.
You can create a YouTube channel where you publish videos around the same topics that you write about. I am sure you have visited YouTube to find out information on how to do things. Well there are people looking for how to information on the problems that you once had.
You can create simple eBooks and reports for people which are value driven. Giving them information relating to specific problems. Problems you have experienced in the past and problems that they are currently experiencing.
You can create video training courses and eLearning platforms for people to then purchase advanced information. You can offer consultation sessions one on one or group mastermind sessions.
Ultimately you can create workshops and seminars which people can either virtually or physically attend.
Simply by having 3 – 5 products and services you can create a business that potentially replaces your full-time income. You will then have a business which you can develop further to enable you to achieve financial and time freedom.
