Content Publishing Platforms – What To Consider When Publishing Online

Content publishing platforms help you gain exposure online, but they can shut you down at the drop of a hat. Here’s what to consider when publishing online.

Hi Trish Davies, here and today I want to talk about content publishing platforms. Over the last 20 years the internet has evolved thus enabling many content publishing platforms to be created. That is great news for you as an online digital business owner because you can attract a world-wide audience.

However, having these powerful content publishing platforms at you fingertips does come with an amount of peril. Now I say that not too put the fear of god in you, more to make you aware that your content is being controlled.

Now just to be clear I don’t condone profanity or abusive content in any way. The point that I am making is that the context of content can change due to change of circumstances around the world.

Much of the world empowers free speech but what you may have published in the past may now take on a different meaning. There are thousands of let’s just say hot topics which people have different opinions on and beliefs about.

Now I am not going to single any topics out, I am sure you can think of what has changed over the years. What I do want to focus on is making you aware about the content you publish now and the content you have banked.

When I say banked I mean what you have published in the past which I recommend you re-visit at some point. You may leverage many different content publishing platforms as I do so you must do some internal housekeeping. Here’s why!

Content Publishing Platforms Change Their Guidelines

content publishing platforms

The content publishing platforms that are available have a habit of changing their minds on what they approve. Now I don’t know the ins and outs of complex algorithms, I don’t need to, but I am aware that they change.

They are changed by the content publishing platforms in line with their terms and conditions. They regularly change for many different reasons but when they do it could mean trouble for you.

I have head stories of business owners getting their accounts shut down either temporarily or permanently. That’s due to the changes the platforms make which then sound the alarm bells.

Content which was ok when originally published may now not meet the criteria. The context may have changed in the world which now makes it sensitive and possibly offends people.

This can happen at the drop of a hat and without warning. Suddenly you try to access your accounts and they are not their or have been suspended in some way. Obviously as a digital business owner this can have a huge impact on your business. It could even shut it down!

My recommendation is that you are always up to date on what is and isn’t allowed. If necessarily go back and edit your content and make sure your current content is on point.

Another thing to consider is that the main platforms such as Google, Bing, Amazon, Facebook can shut down independent platforms. If platforms are using such infrastructure they must abide by terms and conditions. If they don’t then they are taken offline and your accounts with them disappear.

The digital world can be a digital minefield at the best of times.

Worse Cased Scenario

access denied

You will have certain levels of content, mainly video, which is your intellectual property. You must be aware that when you publish that content some platforms may assume the rights to that. Also, your premium content may be hosted on these platforms.

If the worse happens and you get shut down you run the risk of losing that content if you haven’t got it backed up. That would be a disaster for your online business. To avoid that make sure that your content is compliant.

Whether that is your social media posts, your public videos or the written content you have on your website. This content is designed to make people aware of who you are and how you can help. It is also designed to engage people so that you can create a relationship with those people.

Make sure that this content is directing people to your premium content which you have full control over. Having full control means that you have it protected on your own platforms which you control who has access to it.

Best Cased Scenario

password protected

It all comes down to you controlling your premium content and there are ways to do that. You can have it hosted on your own website which is password protected. Meaning you control it by only having people who have paid you to access it.

The downside to this is that it could slow your site down due to the level of content you have. If you have large media files it could affect the performance of the site therefore diluting the experience for your audience.

Alternatively, you could use a platform such as Kajabi like I do to host all my premium content. It is not visible to the public, only my members. It will always be there as my bank and premium content.

All marketing strategies I use on independent and mainstream content publishing platforms will then be directed to Kajabi. There are other platforms such as Kajabi, but this is my preferred option.

Let’s Recap

So, the essence of todays post is to make you aware that as a content creator you must abide by the rules. Rules that are set by the content publishing platforms that you leverage. These platforms are here to help you operate your digital business so you must acknowledge that. Without them you will find it very hard to grow your business and make an impact on peoples lives.

With that said though the content you create is your intellectual property so you must safeguard yourself. Don’t let you endless hours of hard work go to waste through not keeping up on what is and isn’t allowed.

Helping you build your authenticity, authority and audience.
