Hi Trish Davies here and I wanted to kick off this month by delving into some personal branding steps. Your personal brand is what sets you apart from any competition that you face within your niche, industry or marketplace.

Having your own personal brand enables you to show your authenticity, establish your authority and attract an audience. These three core pillars are what I cover within my Build Your AU program.

What I want to share today is some basic but important personal branding steps. This will give you clarity on what you should be looking at when creating your personal brand.

Therefore, get a pen some paper to start making some notes as I will be posing some important questions. By the end of this post, you will have the outline for your personal brand. An outline that you can then further develop while going through my free 9 step personal branding course.

7 Personal Branding Steps That All Entrepreneurs Must Go Through

Step #1 – Finding Your Niche 

Your niche will be determined by what you are great at, this is what will make you stand out from your competitors. This journey of self-development will also highlight your weaknesses which is just as important.

Then you can focus 100% on your strengths because this will pinpoint your growth potential. This exercise is crucial for longer term personal brand development. Here are two simple questions to ask yourself to help you determine what your niche is.

  • What are your skill sets, both hard and soft?
  • What are the projects that you have done in the past that you have loved doing?

Step #2 – Determine Your Target Audience 

It is essential to determine who your targe audience is so that you can tailor your personal brand to them. You must understand that not everyone is going to be a good fit for your personal brand. Therefore, you must not cast such a broad net.

You must however determine how you are going to reach them. The way to do this is to create customer personas, a customer avatar so to speak.

Step #3 – Develop Your Brand Personality 

Your brand personality reflects your personality which is based upon your emotions and characteristics. When both are aligned then your true authenticity will rise to the top which will be aligned with your goals and personal values.

Ask yourself the following two questions.

  • What is your “WHY”?
  • What are your integral values?

Step # 4 – Create Relevant Content 

As an online business owner, you must show your authenticity as I have just mentioned. The best way to do this is through creating relevant content for your audience. Your content is a powerful tool to build a relationship with your audience.

Here are three great strategies to build relevant and value driven content.

  • YouTube – Create value driven videos .
  • Blogging – Create value driven blog posts like this one.
  • Social Media – Regularly post updates and value on your business profiles.

Step #5 – Create Your Social Media Presence 

Social media is where your target audience hangs out, you just need to know what platforms. Once you know though it is your task to create profiles on those platforms. Personal branding requires uniformity so your profiles must match, right down to the finest detail.

Details such as your username, your profile pictures, imagery, message, tone and language. These details will make it easy for your audience to find you and it makes you look professional.

Step #6 – Start Networking 

Your success relies on many different factors but as regard to personal branding steps networking is crucial. Networking can open up so many opportunities for you, it can also provide you with a huge library of new resources.

I would recommend you seeking out a mentor. The reason I say this is when you find a mentor they usually have a vast network of their own. You can leverage their network to your own advantage by increasing your own exposure.

Step #7 – Start Selling Yourself 

Self promotion is the last of the personal branding steps I want to share with you today. Call it a pitch so to speak and it will be the most important 30-60 seconds when you meet new contacts.

Tell people what your professional skills and strengths are along with the experience you have. This is based upon your story which is your unique perspective and what you have done in life. No one else has this story, only you so make sure you leverage it to the hilt.

While creating this self promotion pitch as yourself the following two questions.

  • What makes you unique and sets your apart from the rest?
  • How can you translate this into 30-60 seconds?
