Target audience in marketing. If you don’t know who your target audience then you wasting time in your marketing efforts. Here’s how to define it!
Hi Trish Davies here and today the focus is on define your target audience in marketing your products. Knowing who your target audience is crucial to ensuring that you are producing content that they will find appealing.
It’s important to take the time and make an effort to get to know your target audience. Not just the people who are using your product or service, but their needs, wants, and motivations.
The more you understand about what makes them tick, the easier it will be for you to produce content that resonates with them.
Understanding a particular group of people is never easy. However here are some steps you can follow to help figure out your target audience.
Target Audience In Marketing – Define Your Target Audience
Before you can figure out who your target audience is, you need to determine what your product or service is. You may be a small business that sells handmade jewellery on Etsy. Or you may be a large department store with many different departments like Nordstrom.
Once you know what your product is and how it works, the next step is to come up with a list of keywords that describe it. These keywords will serve as the foundation for your customer base.
As an example, if your business sells handmade jewellery on Etsy, then some relevant keywords might include “handmade gifts” or “customized jewellery.”
The next step involves brainstorming different groups of people who might have an interest in your business. Then, think about how they are similar and different from one another based on their age group, gender, income level, etc.
Once you have this information in front of you, it should be easier for you to pinpoint which group of people make up your target audience.
Now comes the hard part. Take all of this information and narrow it down to find a specific group or niche that shares similarities with one another. However you must ensure that that niche still has its own unique identity (e.g., people living in a certain location).
This group will serve as the core of your target audience and help guide future decisions about content creation. Then you know exactly who you're talking to when creating posts or videos.
Identify Their Needs and Wants
The first step to finding your target audience is to identify what t)hey want. Take the time to get to know them and think about how they might be different from your average customer.
- What is it that they need in their lives?
- Why do they use your product or service?
- What are their motivations?
It’s important to consider who they are, not just what they want. Sometimes people want the same thing but for different reasons.
For example, a stay-at-home mom might want a quick pick-me-up after taking care of her kids all day. However her husband might be looking for something with more substance.
This is an excellent opportunity for you as an entrepreneur. You can tailor your content specifically for these two people and appeal to both needs.
Understand Their Motivations
The first step is understanding their motivations. What do they want? What does your company offer that will fulfil their needs? Understanding a particular group of people is never easy. However here are some steps you can follow to help figure out your target audience.
1) Identify the traits and qualities of your prospective customers.
2) Determine how your product or service helps satisfy those needs.
3) Seek out feedback from others who share some of those characteristics and interests. For example friends & family members.
4) Conduct research on blogs and forums to see what people in similar situations or demographics are saying about the topic at hand.
5) Understand the challenges that they face and know where they get their information. Then you can reach them with useful content.
6) Take note of what catches their attention when scrolling through social media feeds. Then use this knowledge to create more catchy headlines for your posts.
Map Out Your Audience’s Journey
When thinking about your target audience, it’s important to keep in mind the different phases of their journey. What are they going through? What do they need at that point in time?
For example, if you run an online clothing store, think about the different phases of a person’s journey. Right from the first time they visit your site to the last:
1) First they visit your site.
2) Then they browse around and find something they like.
3) Next they add it to their cart and purchase it.
4) They receive their order and try on their clothes.
5) Then they decide whether or not they like what they ordered.
6) If they don’t like what they ordered, how will you deal with this unhappy customer?
Find Your Audience On Social Media
One of the easiest ways to find your target audience is by using social media. Try searching for channels that are related to your niche and see who’s interacting with them.
You can also use social media as a way to gauge what type of content people in your niche are looking for and respond accordingly.
Target Audience In Marketing – Reach Out To Them At Events
