What Are You Good At Professionally? The Importance Of Identifying Your Strengths
It is good to take stock of what you are good at within your business environment. What are you good at professionally? Here’s how to find out!
Hi Trish Davies here and today I want to help you gain clarity on your strengths. What are you good at professionally?
Strengths are something that most people struggle to identify. It’s not so much admitting that you have weaknesses as it is feeling comfortable doing so.
People tend to feel a bit exposed when they know they have a weakness, because it makes them seem less than perfect. This is why a lot of people would rather keep their weaknesses hidden and pretend they don’t exist.
However you can’t succeed in any area of your life unless you first acknowledge what you aren’t good at. More importantly to figure out what you are good at and how that can help support the things you struggle with.
If there’s one thing that holds most people back from reaching their potential professionally, it’s this: They don’t know what they are good at.
Or, more accurately, they won’t admit what they aren’t good at and thus can never get any better at anything .
When we don't know our own strengths and weaknesses, we end up wasting time trying to improve on things we are naturally bad at. That’s because we think it will look good on a resume or help us get a job someday.
Identifying Your Strengths Will Help You Find Your Path In Life
While many people think of strengths as something you are gifted with from birth, there is an element of choice involved. We can choose to use our strengths or ignore them entirely. In a way, our strengths are what define us.
They are what make us unique and when they are combined with other strengths and talents. They are what help us find our place in the world and what we are meant to do with our lives.
If you know what your strengths are and how they can be applied to a job you like, everything else starts to fall in to place. You will know what career path to follow; you will know how to market yourself; you will know how to pitch ideas.
Also you will know how to use your strengths to overcome professional obstacles. You will finally have an answer to the question: What do I want to do with my life?
Knowing What You Are Good At Professionally Will Help You Find Happiness
There are many different types of happiness. However the most important ones are the happiness you get from yourself and the happiness you get from others.
You can’t be truly happy if you don’t like yourself, but you also can’t be truly happy if other people aren’t happy with you. When you know what you are good at, you will feel good about yourself and that will help you to be happy with yourself.
When you are happy with who you are, you will be more comfortable with yourself. Also that will help you to make other people around you happy.
Defining Your Strengths Is The First Step Toward Finding A Career You’ll Love
When you are starting out in your career, it can be tempting to follow the same path that other people have taken before you.
It seems easier to take a path that you know has worked for others. However it also means that you are ignoring your own strengths and interests.
When you are trying to identify your strengths, be as specific as you can. For instance, if you are good at writing and you know you like the idea of being a journalist, that is great.
However if you write that you are good at creative writing, you are opening up a whole new world of career options.
Knowing & Using Your Strengths Will Help Build Confidence
Confidence is something that most people would love to have more of, but very few ever figured out how to get it. Unfortunately, most people are looking in the wrong place.
They think that getting a promotion or earning a higher salary will help them to feel more confident. However in reality it will have almost no impact at all.
Those things can help, but the real power to help you feel more confident is knowing your strengths and using them to your advantage.
Knowing that you have certain strengths and are good at certain things will help to build your self-esteem and your self-confidence.
You will feel more comfortable in your own skin and that will make you feel more confident in all aspects of your life.
