Are You Practicing Accountability And Responsibility In The Workplace Or Is Your Business Standing Still?

If your business is struggling then you may be guilty of showing a lack of accountability and responsibility in the workplace, so why is that?

I have focused a lot up to know around establishing authenticity and authority in your business. They are two of the pillars of my Build Your AU Mastermind program but today I want to get more practical. I am a person that feels actions speak louder than words.

I am very hands on in my business and if I see something needs doing then I get it done. Saying that though there are times, not many, when things get in the way and when that happens it really annoys me. I think everyone should show accountability and responsibility in the workplace. It doesn’t matter what level of position you hold you still must become accountable.

The workplace can be many environments such as factories, warehouses, skyscrapers or a small community store. As a business owner you may be working from your kitchen table or home office but that is still a workplace. Accountability is needed within any of the scenarios I have mentioned other wise productivity reduces. Also discipline takes a nosedive and motivation levels diminish.

Are You Showing Accountability And Responsibility In The Workplace?

accountability and responsibility in the workplace

One of the biggest traits of any business owner is spotting things that need to be done. Then it is taking ownership of those things and putting a plan of action into place. They may well be small things but at the same time they could be huge and making a massive impact on your business. They could be what is stopping your business from gaining traction and moving forward.

It could be an infrastructural issue with physical premises or virtually online through a website. Market research may need to be done and then taking that research into creating a marketing plan. It could be that content needs to be created for the advertisements that are used in that plan. The list could go on and on, but you will have a better idea of what your business needs right now!

You must look at your business and ascertain what needs to be done so that you can move forward. When you have done this, you will gain clarity as to how big the challenge is. Whatever the size of that challenge the principle of tackling it remains the same.

You will have an overall goal of what you want to achieve but sometimes that can be overwhelming. If you then start to break out in a cold sweat, you must take a step back and then prioritise what must be done first. Every process requires steps be completed so look at the big picture and then break everything down.

If you try and run before you can walk, then you will fall flat on your face. Put a timeframe in place and work towards that. It could be daily, weekly or monthly and then become accountable to that plan.

Why I Held My Build Your AU Mastermind Attendees Accountable

Just a few months ago I was hosting my weekly mastermind but circumstances meant I had to break the routine. I was heading of to Bali for a public speaking mastermind which meant I had to cancel the following 2 masterminds. Believe me I felt bad doing so but I knew that attending this mastermind would benefit my business. Also, in the long run it would benefit the mastermind group because of the value I could take back.

Anyway, the mastermind had been running for several weeks and it was structured so the attendees could create their own brand. Their brands would be based upon three pillars which are authenticity, authority and audience. Ultimately, I was helping them create their brand along with creating a product or service to then take to market.

The process is that they show up every week to learn the process of creating their brand and business. They are showing accountability for the commitment they have made. Each week I issue them homework to be done ready for the following week which again makes them accountable.

On this mastermind I informed them of my arrangements and then went around the room. When I say room, I mean in a virtual place because we meet online using video conferencing software.

Each attendee brought everyone up to date on their progress and more importantly what needed to be done. I then set them the challenge of doing what they said live on camera within the next 3 weeks.

They agreed so instantly became accountable to everyone on the call. I also made myself accountable to creating content every day from the mastermind. This is the commitment you need in your business to become successful.

Can You Do This On Your Own?

The simple answer is yes but I would say that you must be very disciplined. If you are the type of person who can hold yourself accountable, then look at what needs doing. Write everything down where you can see it with a clear timeframe and then tick everything off as you complete the tasks.

Life as a sole entrepreneur can sometimes be very lonely, and this is where a lot of people struggle. When I say struggle, I mean in having the lack of support around you. If this is the case and you haven’t got co-workers, then lean on the people who are close to you. Family and friends can be a great help and be great soundboards to get things off your chest.

They also can be the ones that you are accountable to and ask them to take an active role in your progress. They don’t need to know the ins and outs of your business just to be pillars of support.

Create Your Own Support Network

I myself cannot express the power of masterminding with people because you know you have a support network. One that you can call upon whenever you need it to keep you on track.

One thing I will say about trying to do this on your own is that it can lead to procrastination. It is very easy if you haven’t got someone banging in your ear to say, “I’ll do that tomorrow”. Things get put off and days become weeks, then months and even years.

For me the best way to have accountability and responsibility in the workplace is to “put it out there” so to speak. Either on a white board, your phone or in a public forum of family, close friends or other business owners.

Helping you build your authenticity, authority and audience.
