Trish Davies from Build Your AU looks at business skill development and how it increases your chance to become successful in business.
Hi Trish Davies, here from Build Your AU looking at business skill development and why it is crucial for your business. Now the idea for this post actually stems from a personal skill that I have started to learn over the last three months. For my birthday present back in March my daughter Emily got me some roller skates.
Since then I have dedicated an hour or so a week to hone my skills on four sets of wheels. If you have ever roller skated, then you will know that it takes some time to coordinate yourself in respect to balance and confidence. If you have followed me then you will know that I am a very motivated woman and I will not quit.
Over the last few months, I have become more proficient and I am learning new techniques. The reason I continue to develop is because I want to get as much fulfilment out of my new pastime as possible. It is a matter stretching that comfort zone that we all place around us.
Staying within that zone keeps us safe to the perils that we visualise but it also restricts our development. When you break through those barriers you realise that you have been missing out on so much. This is what I am now experiencing and fortunately I have some beautiful parks to explore on my new set of wheels.
As I have said this has given me the inspiration to write todays post and look at business skill development. How it can help you and your business grow!
How Have You Used Your Time In Lockdown?
Lockdown has affected the whole world and there have been many businesses that have been forced to shut their doors. Sadly, for a good proportion of those businesses the front doors will not open for several different reasons.
Obviously the first reason is financial as many business owners simply haven’t had the reserves. They have not been able to ride the storm so have had to cut their losses. Other business owners have used lockdown to diversify their business models and look at different operating procedures.
This involves business skill development not only practically but also within mindset. If they have not wanted to move with the times in the past, they realise that things out of their control now force them to.
This is prevalent to me as my coaching business has needed to restructure. I am contracted to a training company here in New South Wales. For the last few months, I have been training companies from my own home through video conferencing.
I have extensive experience with video conferencing, but I have still needed to adapt. Although I know the training material inside out the environment has changed. Instead of having the clients in front of me they are now sections of my computer screen. Interaction has changed and I have found the long sessions on screen mentally tiring. With that said you must adapt to continue functioning other wise you come to a standstill. Then you run the risk of not coming back because someone else may have taken your position.
So how has lockdown affected you with your business? How are you coming out of it and have you learned any new business skills? Let me know in the comment box below.
Why Skill Development Is Important?
The importance of business skill development can never be understated. As a business owner you will be aware of just how much competition you face. When the dust settles on this pandemic who knows you may have more then you did previously. Other business owners may have diversified and will come back even stronger, so it is not a time to sit still.
Even taking lockdown out of the equation the business world changes every single day. New trends and then are replaced so maybe your current skill sets become outdated. Consumer and market demands shifts so you must combat this by adding to your existing business skills.
As a business owner you never want to get left behind from your competitors, but you run this risk if you stagnate. Plodding along month after month is not healthy so you must look at your risk tolerance. Your competitors will take the risks albeit it in a calculated way so you can match them by developing your business skill sets.
Your ambition must be that you continually see your business improve on many fronts. Obtaining new business skills sets you up to ensure that your business does improve. You will gain the ability to see the signs of any flaws within your business and then act to rectify them.
Business Skill Development For Entrepreneurs
The world has become a small place due to technology both with transport and communication tools. A small caveat though because we all know that travel is restricted due to the pandemic. This will end at some point in the future so is still relevant today as it ever has been.
With that being said your business may appeal to a global economy both at a consumer and business level. You may have international clients and suppliers which sometime means you may come across language issues.
A great skill to learn might be foreign languages with the people who you deal with. I am not saying becoming fluent but if you can hold a basic conversation it could cut down on time.
There will be times when you are on Zoom or have to meet face to face, so it is a way of paying respect to the other person. Rather than expecting them to talk to you in your native tongue even if it’s not theirs.
Communication is also important at your own business level with your employees. It helps with organization but more importantly you make yourself clear and concise on what you expect from them.
Another skill you must be good at when running a business is employee development. This ties nicely in with communication because there will be times when you need to teach. They may not have some skills they need which you already have. Delegation is important because you can’t do everything so you must be able to show people what to do.
Are You Good With Money?
On top of your list for business skill development must be your financial awareness. Do you know the state of play with your business as regard to profit and loss? Sometimes it is hard to balance the books as many people have found out over the last few months.
Have you got enough coming in to meet your requirements and commitments? Is there enough in the reserves for the next global catastrophe when it happens, and it will? Money management is crucial so invest in yourself to gain the knowledge you need. You may have accountants, but you must know what is going on.
How Are Your Digital Skills?
Business in 2020 and going forward relies heavily on having the digital skills needed position yourself in the digital economy. You may be unfamiliar with how social media works for businesses, how powerful blogging is and paid marketing. Have you got these skills in your toolbox that you can leverage when needed?
I have vast experience with YouTube, and I am very comfortable on camera to create videos. That hasn’t stopped me from improving my overall YouTube skills. I have recently purchased a course specifically for business owners because my goal is to improve my YouTube channel.
You must look at your digital skills and identify where you need to improve. There are vast resources online that address every aspect of digital marketing. Take time to master one at a time and if there are things that you know will be beyond you then outsource them to a professional.
That is an important point because you don’t want to end up as a jack of all trades and master of none. Do what you are good at always continue to improve those skills. The others delegate!
