In general, human beings are great at many things and individually we all have special qualities. These can be referred to as natural talents, aspects that we excel in and have an eye for. Not everyone is equal though and the levels of achievement can differ, but no achievement should be overlooked.
We All Need Education But To What Level?
It is a fact that we all need to be educated so that we can take our place in society. You need basic life, social and academic skills to function but you don’t need to be geniuses to become successful. There is a lot of emphasis all around the world that you need a university level education. That is true if you if your ambition is to become a doctor, lawyer, accountant or any other professional profession.
I would agree that a degree would help you attain a higher position in many industries and now way belittle it. What I would say is that it is not the be all and end all and many education systems are somewhat antiquated. What they teach may have been relevant decades ago, but the world has moved on.
If you some research, you will find that many of the most influential entrepreneurs were not very good at school. A great example would be Sir Richard Branson of Virgin fame and fortune. He suffered from dyslexia and had very poor academic performance at school. Yet by starting a magazine and then a mail order record business he has built one of the most recognisable and successful brands.
Maybe his talent was to spot an opportunity and then have the motivation and conviction to follow through. Sometimes that is all that’s needed, an idea and the planting of a seed to then cultivate.
How To Identify Your Natural Talents Through Self Awareness
The point that I am trying to make is that you don’t need letters after your name or reams of certificates. You will have certain natural talents or gifts inside you right now. Some you may be aware of and some not so much so here is how to extract them from your inner core.
The best place to start is to look at what you have achieved so far in life. This will form the foundations on what you are great at. You may already have some academic or professional qualifications, but it is also important to look at personal achievements.
Usually you find that achievements fall into the categories of health, wealth and relationships. You may have overcome some health issues or been savvy with your investments. Or you may have built strong and loving relationships with the people around you and who you care about.
Once you have identified your achievements it is important to then dig deep into them. Here is where you will find those golden nuggets, the reasons why you made them a success. It could be empathy, motivation, determination or practical elements which are all natural talents.
A natural talent is something that you are good at and which you find easy to the point that it is effortless. Also bear in mind a talent is also something that you enjoy doing and you get lost in. Look at things that you spend time doing over the course of a week or month. This is a great indicator as to what you are good at.
Ask Your Circle Of Influence
We have looked at self-awareness, so it is time to ask the people who you are close to. Your family and friends will know you very well and sometimes will know you better than yourself. That may seem a strange thing to say but sometimes you just can’t see the blindingly obvious.
Ask your circle of influence to write down what they think your natural talents and gifts are. This will give you valuable insights and it will throw things up that you never would have thought about. Your circle of influence will all have different perspectives and opinions so you will find out what you need to identify your talents.
Also, when you are in business it is beneficial to join mastermind groups that consist of other business owners and entrepreneurs. I find this very valuable because you get that raw business perspective which you don’t get from your family and friends. Consider this as an outer circle of influence who you can maybe collaborate and brainstorm with.
