There is so much uncertainty and fear around the world that people are looking for hope and reassurance.

You only have to watch the news channels for just a few minutes to see how this situation is taking it’s toll. Thousands of people are tragically losing their lives, businesses are being forced to shut and may not reopen. Individuals are facing the reality of less money in their wallets and some having no money at all.

They are turning to the internet to find solutions and in many circumstances just a small sliver of light. Searching for that ray of hope to help them along this dark journey we are on.

You Don’t Need A Hollywood Script

When you look at mainstream marketing and communication within the media everything is very polished. Everything is scripted, the lighting is perfect, the presenters are reading from auto-cue and are plastered with makeup.

If you want the long-winded infomercials life seems to be idyllic with people in big houses and always smiling. They may spill a glass of red wine on their pure white carpet and not have a care in the world. That’s because they have this magic potion to use with this all conquering machine.  They’re as calm as a millpond with not a bead of sweat appears on their unfurrowed brow.

That depiction of life would not happen in the real world. A sense of panic would set in and immediately they would be looking online for a fast solution. Think about the times when you have wanted to find out how to do something. There would be two resources you would go to, being Google & YouTube.

The you would click on a video from someone who looked a real person in the hope that they could help you. There is something quite satisfying when seeing someone getting their hands dirty in a pair of overalls. The reason is that it is true to life, real and authentic.

No script as such, no fancy production, just pure value being given by someone who you can relate and connect to. This is the feeling you must generate when you are looking to engage with your potential leads and customer.

How To Improve Communication With Customers Starts With Removing The Mask

The idea for this post comes from the situation the world finds itself in with Covid-19. I have noticed that there have many celebrities and stars trying to do the bit for the cause. Because of social distancing most people are finding themselves confined to their homes, even the wealthiest people on the planet.

Music stars are getting together and jamming from their homes. Comedians are setting up live streams to try and bring some humour and light-heartedness the situation. Even some sports are trying to set up competitions that people can watch from home. These events are not on the same scale of production as what they normally are and that doesn’t matter.

This is the point I was making in a video that I did from my car and it was an inspired thought. I have many during the day and the great ting is that the technology we have at our fingertips allows us to record it.

I was in my car, yet I had the opportunity to reach the whole world by recording and uploading. No script because everything was coming from the heart and no time to edit. Not that I wanted to do in any case.

At that moment I knew that I had value to share to my own audience, connections and further afield. So, I put it out there because it shows who I am as a person and this is what I want people to see.

This is the point that I want to make to you when it comes to you communicating with your audience.

Your Audience Wants To See The Real You 

You will connect with your customers through the content create and video is by far the best medium to use. I am assuming that you have a phone with video capability on it and this is all you need. When you are out and about, just like I was, take your phone and start to record what you are thinking.

Every thought or point however small it may seem is value to other people. It could just be the thing that people are looking for at that moment in their life. It will have more impact than the example I gave of the false infomercial.

That’s because it comes from a place of authenticity, realness and rawness. Your emotion and empathy will shine like a beacon of light for that person. You will have them hooked and they will come back time and time again for more.

There is nothing more impactful than being in the moment. The moment only happens once and cannot be rehearsed time and time again until it is deemed as perfect. Your audience doesn’t want perfection and I find the imperfection of pauses and stumbling over words holds more weight.
