As an online coach you must understand what a teaching cycle model looks like. Here are the five stages to the teaching cycle model to help plan your courses.

Hi Trish Davies here to look at strategy when it comes to creating your online coaching business. The objective of your coaching business is to teach people how to achieve their desired outcome.

Understanding what that desired outcome is your starting point within this teaching cycle model. There are many stages though that you must complete before your client has that desired outcome.

This is what I want to focus on today. To give you a roadmap that you can follow with all your coaching clients. This teaching cycle model applies to whatever format of teaching and coaching you implement within your business.

Whether that is face to face in person, or virtually, to automated coaching programs. The five step process I will share with you must be utilised to the finest detail.

5 Stages Of The Teaching Cycle Model

The teaching cycle model is an ongoing process that delivers the desired outcome for your client. That outcome usually is a transformation which could be practical emotional or physical transformation.

Your training program is kind of an eco-system where you help your clients develop the skills they need. Then continues even after they have completed the program. It is not just a “thank you very much and good luck for the future” business model.

This teaching cycle model focuses on five definitive areas which are as follows.

  • Identify Your Client’s Needs
  • Plan & Design Your Training Program
  • Deliver Your Training Program
  • Asses Your Clients Progress
  • Evaluate Your Training Program

Identify Your Client’s Needs 

This is your starting point as I mentioned earlier. What you must do here is to identify the knowledge gap your client has. This means what they know now and what they need to learn.

Each of your clients will have specific differences when it comes to their needs. You must pinpoint them and deliver a tailor made solution to meet those needs. This is critical especially if you are working closely with someone on a one to one basis.

For an automate program you will need to  do research into your ideal audience. Use questionnaires, application forms, individual and group conversations to gather the general pain points your audience suffers.

Some of this general content can be used specifically for individual training when the need arises.

Plan & Design Your Training Program 

Once you have the information you need from the first stage it is time to plan & design your training program. Here you will look at the desired outcome that your client wants to achieve and then break it down into segments. Work backwards to plan how you can deliver that desired outcome.

The situation in the word at the moment with Covid-19 means that most training is done virtually. You must have clarity if this is the way that you want to move forward or is there a need to deliver in a classroom environment.

I experience this through my corporate training role. Before Covid-19 it was all done at the company headquarters. The pandemic changed the landscape which meant Zoom became the tool that I used and have done since with a couple of exceptions.

These are the options that you have available to you when planning and designing your training program.

  • Classroom Style Training
  • Virtual Learning Through A Platform Such As Zoom
  • Self Paced eLearning Through An Automated Program

These three models require planning and designing. Your training program will include modules. Those  modules will include lessons and it is these lessons which are the step by step process that will deliver the desired outcome for your client.

You must define what information is delivered and at what point. Also, you must define at what points you need to have an assessment of the progress your client is making.

Therefore, you must create a flow that your training program works to.

Deliver Your Training Program 

This stage of the teaching cycle model will naturally evolve through the planning and design that you have done. Are you training sessions going to be delivered offline, online or a form of self paced learning?

Delivering your lessons will need planning. Even though I have conducted hundreds, if not thousands, of training sessions I still need to plan and prepare. Each live audience is different and requires me to assess the needs of the clients I have in front of me.

You must utilise the resources that you have available to transfer your knowledge to your clients. Also, you must empower your clients to participate actively within your training sessions. You must have a clear objective that you want to achieve for each lesson.  

Asses Your Clients Progress 

As a coach and a trainer your role is not solely to deliver and teach your content. You have a responsibility to assess whether your clients are getting the point of your teaching. Are they absorbing and understanding what you are delivering?

To do this is simple through conducting assessments, creating quizzes and tests for your clients. You must have this created within the planning and design stage; it must be ready to go when needed. Here’s how to do it.

  • Set Written Assignments – You can ask your clients to complete essays, research documents and evaluate previous case studies. Then submit them to you for you to assess.
  • Host Online Masterminds – Here you can bring your clients together to have online discussions. My recommendation is once a month you get your clients together because they can brainstorm off each other. Also, you start to create an exclusive community where your clients feel safe to participate in.
  • Create Tests & Exams – Tests and exams can be created in different formats such as multiple choice, short & long term answers. There are plenty of online resources where you can create these for your clients.

Evaluate Your Training Program 

Here you must evaluate how you are doing as a coach, teacher and trainer. Are you meeting the requirements to deliver your clients desired outcome? Therefore, you must ask for feedback from your clients.

Use online survey platforms to ask your clients the questions you need to ask. Have a regular mastermind which is an open forum for your clients to say what your are doing right and also what could be improved.

Then take action where you need to take it and continually improve your training program. Your training program will evolve and improve when you take the time to evaluate yourself.
