What Makes A Good Online Course?
Over the next few minutes, you will develop clarity on what makes a good online course. The Build Your AU 9-week program will give you the ideas and topics for your online course. What I am going to share with you today are some strategies to implement while putting your course together. Here goes!
Your Course Must Be Interactive
You must get you students involved and interact with you while they are taking your course. Obviously your course must have high quality information in the videos and written material that you provide. It also needs to have the facility where your students can interact with you as the tutor and mentor.
Also, it helps if you can get your students to interact with each other where they can debate various issues. Your objective is to create a social learning environment where people can collaborate.
A perfect example of this is my weekly Build Your AU mastermind. They interact with myself as the coach and they interact with each other. Many strong personal and professional relationships have been created through this process.
Another option is dependent on your online course delivery platform, but it may be possible to have a live commenting facility. Underneath each lesson or picture people can leave their feedback for you and others to act upon. This helps the general vibe and energy of the course stay as high as possible.
Also consider creating a Facebook specifically for your paying students to join, contribute and hang out together.
Your Online Course Must Be Challenging
Your online course must challenge your students, it must push them to their limits and beyond in necessary. It must also be engaging and enjoyable to participate in so you must find a common ground where challenge, engagement and enjoyment come together.
You must get their mind working, make things cognitively challenging to enhance their skills, abilities and knowledge.
Your Course Must Be Effective
This carries on from my previous point and making sure your course is challenging. You objective is to enhance their skills so provide activities that they can participate in.
For example, ate the end of each module maybe consider compiling a quiz or test relating to what they have learnt. Multiple choice questions are great because it makes them consider different options before deciding on the answer.
You Must Make Your Students Take Action
Again, this follows on and compliments the previous point. Don’t fall into the trap of creating a course where your students just watch and read. You must incorporate a “doing” element to create a doing and taking action mindset.
For example, say you are creating a course on how to advertise on Facebook. Your lectures will show you going through the process and the methodology behind it. Then you must instruct your students to follow the same actionable steps before they move onto the step of the course.
Your students will learn more if they implement what you teach them. It is the best learning process anyone can go through. It is a simple LEARN – DO formula.
Your Course Must Have An End Objective In Mind
You must have clarity on what the end objective is for your students. What is it you are teaching them to do? What is their desired outcome? Once you know this then it is easy to then structure your course which is something I will speak about in another post.
What you must avoid is leaving your students hanging at the end of the process. If they have not delivers their desired outcome then you have failed, not them.
You Must Be Visible To Your Students
I touched on this earlier when I said your students must be able to interact with you. Here you must go further by showing that you have empathy for your students and that you care about them.
Your students are everyday people who have their own problems and concerns to overcome. Here is where you can show your mentorship qualities by being approachable and responsive to them when they need you to be.
This is my share on what makes a good online course. There are lots of strategies here for you to implement and make your course stand out from your competitors. Along with the strategy you must show the human side to your course which is something that focus on with my own courses.
If you are serious about creating your own online courses and personal brand then enrol now on my 9-week program here. I look forward to seeing you on the inside.
