Hi Trish Davies, here, personal and corporate coach and the founder of Build Your Au. Developing a coaching mindset is crucial before you even attempt to coach people.

You must understand that the people you aspire to coach have goals that they want to meet.  They want to grow as people and are putting their trust and hope in you! Therefore, you must deliver on all fronts and not leave them short changed.

As a coach you are also embarking on a journey and you will face challenges and obstacles. Ones that you must overcome to reach your potential and fulfil the potential of your students.

So coaching is something that has huge impact on people when you do it the correct way. With that said are you interested to find out exactly what coaching is and is not?

What Is Coaching?

what is coaching

Many people have a wrong perception of coaching. To illustrate this lets first look at what coaching isn’t!

First let’s look at mentoring. Mentoring is focused on providing advice and suggesting what you should do. Then we have training. A trainer has a fixed set of content that they teach people to achieve a specific goal. Finally coaching sometimes get compared to counselling but councillors are more focused on past issues and experiences.

When it comes to coaching a coach can be defined by the following. Coaching follows a process that is aimed to improve performance in the present and has nothing to do with the past or future. Coaches help people to learn, that really is the nuts and bolts to it.

A coach inspires an individual to maximise their potential on both a personal and professional level. If you are a coach then you task is to actively listen to what people say to you. On the other side of the coin, you as a coach must also pick up on what people are not saying to you as well.

Great coaches get to the core of any problems that people have by asking the right questions. This is an exploration process that delivers total clarity on what the issues are.

Coaches believe that the people they are coaching have the potential and answers to achieve their goals They just need that extra help to push them over the line. Everyone is different and coaches recognise this fact. Therefore, they can adapt their approach to fit, shift the persons perspective and empower them to gain new learnings.

Great Coaches Help People Break Through Their Safety Bubble

A coach will now where someone’s comfort zones ends but has the ability to take them to that boundary. As a coach you will understand a persons emotions, their fear, their resistance to taking that extra step further to break through.

When they do break through the person will enter additional zones which starts with fear, then leads onto learning and ultimately ends with growth. As a coach you will have the ability to take people on this journey of hope which climaxes with them fulfilling their goals.

For you to become an impactful coach you must have the right mindset yourself. Therefore, here are some tips on developing a coaching mindset.

Developing A Coaching Mindset

As a great coach you must understand that it is all about them. The person you are coaching must be firmly front and centre at all times. It is not about you! Their needs and agendas are paramount, you are there to help and assist!

In many ways coaching is perfecting the art of conversation both physically and through the power of speech. Developing a coaching mindset will help you give clear direction and guidance but at the same time improving the persons thought processes.

You are there to help them solve their problems and reach their goals. However, you want to empower them through your guidance to in effect solver their own problems. This is were the impact of your coaching is most prevalent and powerful.

Tips On Developing A Coaching Mindset

Always look to maximize the potential of the person you are coaching. They already have most of the answers within themselves. You must empower them through your coaching to unlock the answers for themselves wherever possible.

You must always promote accountability by setting concreate actions that they must take. Also, it is your job as a coach to clarify any potential obstacles and setbacks that they may encounter.

You must empower them to take the action they need to take to achieve their goals. This is a given after every coaching session that you hold with that person.

As a coach you want to encourage people to sometimes think out of the box so to speak. Get them to consider the new possibilities that await, new actions that they undertake and the potential outcomes they could benefit from.

Insist and challenge people to reach as high as they can. They must shoot for excellence, set huge challenges and higher goals. Never allow them to settle for normal or average!

You must provide structure and organization. Never allow them to wonder what they need to do and when they need to do it. You must condition them to adopt new practices and install them into their day to day routine.

You as a coach must be up to date on what you are coaching. There will always be new tools and resources at your disposal so make sure you are open to change and then leverage that change.
