How To Market An Online Course – 5 Ways To Generate Sales

how to market an online course

There are a number of ways to market any product or service online. Frankly there are too many to mention in this post so what I have done is compile a list of the 5 marketing strategies to create awareness, engagement and conversion.

YouTube

YouTube is by far my favourite marketing platform. I love creating videos for my online business and you can get a flavour of how I use YouTube by visiting my channel here.

The strategy for using YouTube as a free marketing option is to create value through your videos. Don’t create videos that are pushy and salesy as that will put people off right from the moment they click on your video.

You must look at creating value based videos that address pain points and offer solutions. The best way to do this is by creating “How To” type videos. People go onto Google, which is the parent company to YouTube, to look for solutions.

They may type into the search box “How to market an online course”. If you have created a video addressing that problem then Google will list your video which is hosted on YouTube.

Once they land on your video they will watch your content. Also, they will check out the description box below your video. Here you provide a description on what your video is about. Also, you can input links to either your opt-in or sales page for your online course.

Create A Blog Post

The principles are the same here as they are when creating videos. Blogging is still a powerful marketing strategy. This is what I am doing right now with this blog post. I am providing value to address the search query of “how to market an online course”.

This post is hosted on my website which is Build Your AU so you would use your own authority website. Also, you can guest post on third party websites. Whichever strategy you use you will create a value based article and within the article you will have a link to the landing page for your course.

Create A Podcast

Podcasting is becoming increasingly popular. It is where you have your own channel and create podcast episodes. There are numerous podcasting platforms where you can create your own channel.

Again, the emphasis is attracting an audience by creating value based content. You will have the opportunity to promote your online course landing page on your channel.

However, make sure there is a clear distinction between the free content you publish on your channel to that in your course.

Social Media

social media marketing

Social media is huge as we all know. Saying that your audience will congregate on certain platforms so you must identify where they hang out. The strategy is the same as the previous methods and apologies if I sound like a broken record.

Your social media profiles are designed to publish updates and provide value. Don’t go into social media with the attitude of “Buy my stuff”. It won’t work and will only have a detrimental effect on your business.

What you can do here is provide snippets of the content you are creating on the previous mediums. Provide a link to the piece of content which is where you have your links to your course.

Paid Advertisements

Here the strategy changes as you are paying advertising platforms. Therefore, you want people to take a specific action. That action is your objective which could be lead generation, initiating the conversion, or making a sale.

Paid advertising is a steep learning curve. You must understand how each platforms works so that you create effective marketing campaigns. The benefit of paid advertising is that you will see faster results than the organic methods I have previously mentioned.

How To Market An Online Course – Create Your Landing Page

Your landing page is the first point of intentional contact. What I mean is that your audience will click on a link that takes them to another specific page. If your objective is lead generation then you will direct people to an opt-in, or squeeze page.

Here the objective is to get their email address so that you can market to them in the future.

If on the other hand you are looking for the sale you will direct people to a sales page. This is the money page because it has clear call to action buttons for people to click and make a purchase.

When marketing an online course, the strategy I recommend is to generate the lead first. Then nurture that lead by providing value through email communication to initiate the conversion of the sale.
