To have a successful career, you need both hard and soft skills.

On one hand, you need to know how to do your job well so that you can continue getting promotions and meaningful work.

On the other hand, you also need to know how to market yourself in such a way that you stand out from the crowd.

If you want to get ahead in today’s workforce, it’s essential that you develop a strong personal brand. A personal brand will open up new doors for opportunities. It will also help ensure that your resume doesn’t go straight into the circular file when you apply for future jobs.

In this blog post, I will teach you what personal branding is and why it’s important. Also I will give you some advice on how best to create your own personal branding formula.

Personal branding is the process of creating a consistent and positive professional identity based on who you are, what you do, and what you aspire to achieve.

The idea behind it is simple. You want to portray yourself in a way that highlights your strengths and makes you stand out from the crowd.

Before you can start building your brand, you need to answer a few key questions:

  • What do you want your brand to be about?
  • Who do you want to reach with your brand?
  • What value do you want to add to your audience’s lives?
  • How do you want to be perceived? 

Why is Personal Branding Important? 

In today’s competitive job market, it’s not enough to just be able to do your job well. You also need to stand out from the crowd.

Individuals with strong brands are more likely to be promoted, receive raises, and be given more interesting work. Along with being seen as leaders and experts in their field.

Start by asking yourself these questions:

  • Who are you?
  • What do you do?
  • Where do you do it?
  • Why do you do what you do?
  • How do you do what you do?

These five questions will give you a basic overview of your brand. Also your answers will determine what to include in your messaging and how to stand out from the crowd.

Once you have this basic overview, it’s time to start building your brand.

Step 1: Decide On Your Brand’s Position

When you create a product, you first need to determine its position in the marketplace.

  • What is it competing against?
  • Who is your product designed for?
  • What problem does it solve?

By the same token, when you create a brand, you first need to figure out what your brand is competing against.

  • What other brands or people does your brand fit in with?
  • Who does your brand appeal to?
  • What problem does it solve?

Here’s an example: Let’s say that you work in accounting and you want to create a personal brand that stands out from the crowd. To start, you would ask yourself: What is accounting and who are the key players in that industry? You might come up with a few things like accountants, bookkeepers, bean counters, CFOs, controllers, auditors, and more.

Step 2: Identify Your Target Audience(s)

Next, you want to take the answers to the questions above and start narrowing down your target audience by asking yourself:

  • Who are these people?
  • What are their interests and their pain points?
  • What do they care about?
  • How old are they?
  • How do they see the world?

By answering these questions, you will start to create a clearer picture of who your ideal clients are.

Once you have a better idea of who you would like to reach, it’s time to go out and find them.

Step 3: Determine What You Want To Be Known For 

The next step in creating your brand is to determine that for which you want to be known.

  • What are your strengths and specialties?
  • What are your areas of expertise?
  • Finally what do you want to be associated with?

The key here is to be specific. You don’t want to be the jack of all trades; you want to be the master of one.

By deciding what you want to be known for, you are then able to create a marketing strategy that is targeted and laser-focused.

This will help to make your marketing more effective, resulting in a greater number of leads and sales as well as getting more referrals.

Step 4: Create The Visuals That Reinforce Your Brand 

The key to successfully branding yourself is to be consistent. You want people to associate you with a certain set of values or characteristics. Therefore you need to be very deliberate in the way that you present yourself online and off.

For example, let’s say that you want to be associated with creativity and innovation.

To reinforce your brand, you might want to include a creative picture on your social media platforms. Then design a more creative business card and use unique and innovative ways to present yourself in job interviews.

Step 5: Develop Your Elevator Pitch & Resume Copy 

Finally, you need to put everything that you’ve been working on so far into action.

The last piece of the puzzle is to write your elevator pitch and update your resume.

Creating an elevator pitch is a 30-second summary of who you are, what you do, and what value you offer. Then you’ll have a quick and easy way to introduce yourself at networking events or when meeting new people.
