How To Write A Personal Branding Statement

If you don’t know what your personal brand means then how do you expect others to? Here is how to write a personal branding statement for clarity of purpose.

Hi Trish Davies here again to look at a core principle, element, to personal branding. That is how to write a personal branding statement. Now you may have heard the term “personal branding statement” or you may not?

A personal branding statement is much more than a nice logo and colours. It is the real purpose behind your business and personal brand. When you create your personal branding statement it will give clarity to your audience of the position you have taken.

It will also give you total clarity on your purpose and where you want to take your business. Sometimes that gets forgotten but it really should be set in stone before you take any action into developing your business.

After all, how can you develop your business when you don’t know what you want to do. Also, you don’t know why you are doing it in the first place!

What Is A Personal Branding Statement?

personal branding statement

A personal branding statement short and sweet. One or two sentences of text that tells the world what you do, how you do it, why you do what you do. Also, you can incorporate what makes you unique.

You will see that large, massive, international companies have a branding statement in place. Microsoft at it’s founding had the following statement –

“A computer on every desk and in every home”

In my own country which is Australia the Department of Health have the following statement –

“Better health and wellbeing for all Australians, now and for future generations”

As you an see huge organisations have them in place so it is important for you to have yours. It is not just exclusive for these huge entities.

Individuals can position themselves alongside the big boys & girls and tell the world what makes them special. Here is my own personal branding statement which you can find over at Trish Davies International.

My PURPOSE… My WHY is

“To loyally inspire others to confidently recognise their gifts and talents.

So that they are determined to move forward and create a life that matters.”

When people check me out they instantly know what to expect from me and how I can help, serve, them.

How To Write Your Personal Branding Statement

I am going to look at several key elements to creating the perfect personal branding statement. As you go through what I am about to share the seed to your own statement will be sown. I will give you the opportunity to develop that seed later on through my free 9-step personal branding program.

Right now, though it is time to get practical and start to put together your own personal branding statement.

Write Down Your Skills

I want you to start writing down all the skills that you have. This will be a general list that you can drill down deeper into later. Make a list of your skills, the experiences you have had, your personal qualities, your values etc.

Define Who You Like To Help

Look back at all the jobs you have done and define if there were any favourites. Maybe you already have your own clients, are there any you really love working for? Are there any commonalities in the people who you have really liked helping?

Be Aware Of What Others Are Saying

Here you need to go on a fact finding mission. Start listening to what others are saying. This could be eavesdropping in on certain conversations at gatherings, personal or business.

Check out social media profiles of people who are in the same industry as you. What language are they using and in what context? You will find that there is a common thread which is something that you can model.

I say model because you want to that general thread, but you must add in your own uniqueness.

What Makes You Different?

I just mentioned uniqueness so let’s expand on that. Here is where step #1 comes into play where you looed at your own skills. What you have written here will make you stand out from your competitors. They don’t have the same skills and experiences as you have.

Who Is Your Target Audience?

Step #2 comes into play here because you have defined who you love to help and serve. Don’t overcomplicate things here as it could come down to age, gender and specific industry.

Start Putting Some Sentences Together

Here you want to start writing down some ideas for your personal branding statement. Here is a simple formula to help you with that process.

Offer Clarity

I help (market) get (desire) without (roadblock) by (method)

Your product is the method.

Market = Audience

Desire = What They Want

Roadblock = The number 1 thing customer thinks they must know what to do but you know they don’t to get desire, or something really hard they are avoiding

Method = Method to get desire and your product is what helps them execute the method

Don’t put product in method position

Must get customer to believe that they can get what they desire through the method. Then you can sell them the product.

Once you make this statement you then make all your business decisions in alignment with this statement.
