I think it is fair to say by landing on this page that you aspire to becoming an entrepreneur. That may have stemmed from an early age through influence of family members who had their own businesses.
Also, you may have seen celebrity entrepreneurs like Sir Richard Branson, Jeff Bezos, and Steve Jobs. Living the lifestyle so to speak with all the trimmings that are attached to wealth and success. It wasn’t always like that for them and they all came from small start-ups that grew into the monsters they have become.
From small record shops to spare bedrooms and basements they all had a vision and dream. To build something special that would have massive impact on the world. This they have done but it did take time to achieve their success.
Those are extreme examples of what’s possible if you have the motivation, work ethic and determination. There are millions of unsung heroes within the entrepreneurship world that have taken the same journey.
They are not household names but one thing they have in common. That is, they have followed the steps to becoming an entrepreneur and this is what I want to cover today.
Also, I am going to look at the mindset of employees, the self-employed and entrepreneurs to see the differences. Then you can see where you are now in the journey and what actions you need to take.
Employee To Entrepreneur
Most of the world start their professional life as an employee and maybe this represents yourself. Whether it is a Saturday job or one that you do in the evening it usually means a few hours here and there. Then you will take on your first fulltime position which is a major milestone in life.
Usually though this means that you start towards the bottom of the ladder and over time you work your way up. Hard work starts to pay off and you attain promotion after promotion. This elevates your status in the company, and you hold more responsibility in your role and the people under you.
Now there is nothing wrong with this and people can earn a very comfortable living and enjoy a great life. The stages of employee to entrepreneur revolves around mindset.
The mindset of an employee is they crave the security that a paycheck brings them. Employees steer clear of taking risks and are more focused on gaining more education to learn new skills sets. Then when they need more money, they take those new skill sets and get a better job.
The next stage to entrepreneurship is taking on the role of becoming self-employed. The mindset of a self-employed person is that still want to work a job but want to have more control.
People who enter self-employment usually are bad employees and don’t like being told what to do. They have attitude, think that they can do things better than other people and they are more risk tolerant.
Self-employment is a broad category which includes professional people such as doctors, lawyers, and accountants. Also included are skilled tradespeople to people offering a general service. When they need more money, they work more hours.
What Is An Entrepreneur?
This leads me nicely onto entrepreneurship and your own aspirations to become and entrepreneur. For you to become one you will not own a job like the previous groups of people.
What you will do is have your own business and own a system or product that makes you money even when you are not working. To achieve this, you will acknowledge that you can’t do things on your own like a self-employed person.
You will hire people to undertake tasks that you are skilled in so you can concentrate areas you are. Having the ability to delegate tasks is critical to your success which in will allow you to have more time. Time to take those long holidays with the reassurance that your business is ticking over nicely.
As an entrepreneur you will embrace risk but in a calculated manner and you will be a decisive decision maker. Hiring, firing, and spotting the opportunities are decisions that you must act upon.
When you need more money, you will create a new product or system that generates revenue. This is then added to your portfolio.
Steps To Becoming An Entrepreneur

The first place to start is by looking in the mirror because the business you build will represent who you are. It will help if your business is something that is based upon your passions in life. Look at your true natural talents, gifts, and passions because you will have the foundations to work from.
This is something that some people struggle with because they simply don’t realise the potential they already have. If this is the case, then support from other people helps because they can see what you can’t. Speak to your circle of influence because they will be honest with you and give you the data you need.
