Understanding customer needs and wants is a must for any online business owner. If you don’t then how can you provide the solution?

Your customers are the people who pay you wages, out money in your bank account, make you a profit. Now that seems a clinical analysis, but it is fact. However, it doesn’t mean this should be your perception of your customer.

They are real people, not just a credit card number or a transaction that you see lodged in your sales ledger. They are looking to your for help, for value, to ease their pain, to provide a solution.

Understanding customer needs and wants is paramount to the success of your business. It is the tipping point that will bring in the money to your business. Failure to develop this mindset as a business owner will result in one thing, FAILURE!

A few months ago, I created a post on how to define who is your ideal customer. When you have a few minutes I recommend that you read that post because it will give you some clarity.

Today I want to expand that conversation by understanding customer needs and wants. I feel that will help you pinpoint what is going through your customers minds and give you a visual perception of who they are.

To do this I will give you a couple of examples of customer needs and wants from two different niches. Then I will give you some insights of how to provide a solution to each potential problem.

I realise that this maybe not the field, industry or niche that you are in. However, the principles remain the same and can be applied to any marketplace. At the end of today’s post, I will give you an opportunity develop you business ideas through a self-discovery process. More on that shortly. For now, let’s look at two potential customer scenarios.

Customer # 1 – Online Business Owner 

Now there are many needs and wants that an online business owner has. For this example, I am going to focus on a must for any online business owner. That is having an authority website.  

Every online business owner wants and needs an authority website. Now these come in all shapes, sizes and designs but the principles remain the same.

An online business owner must have presence online, that is a given. An authority website provides that online presence much like a shop or office gives to a traditional business.

So, the authority website is the basic needs and wants for the customer, but it goes much deeper. The authority website provides a central hub for the business owner where potential customers can check in.

As an online business owner, you must have the facility to communicate with your customer base. You can do that through creating content that provides value, educates and inspires your potential customer.

Also, the authority website is a place to offer products and services. Customers can enter their payment details into the system that the website has set up. Then a chain reaction is created resulting in packing and shipping products.

This system creates an automated process which in effect runs the business. This is what the customer wants and needs within their business.

Now to fulfil these wants and needs the system must be created. The challenges the online business owner may have is that they are not technically savvy. They simply don’t know where to start and this is where a website develop comes in.

That person has the expertise, knowledge and understanding how to create this system. Because they understand the exact wants and needs of the customer they can provide a tailor made solution. A solution that delivers the ideal outcome for the customer.

Customer #2 – Overweight And Unfit Individual 

This is a widespread problem for the majority of the world’s population. However, there are endless reasons why people end up in this position. With that said there are endless reasons why individuals want to do something about it.

Now for this example I am going to look at a 50 year old man who is chronically overweight and unfit. This is the problem, the wants and needs is to lose that excess baggage but again the reasoning lays much deeper.

This person has been to the doctors and has been told bluntly that he must lose weight. If he doesn’t then the likelihood is that he will die within the next 12 months. That is sobering to say the least, but he has just become a grandad.

Therefore, he wants to see his grandchild grow up to carry on the family name, maybe his legacy. Death is not an option, becoming healthy and fit is so that he can live to see his grandchild grow up, to become a role model to this tiny person.

All problems have an emotional connection to them, family is the ultimate emotional connection.

Again, you must get into the mindset of the customer. You need this information so that you can provide a tailormade solution. This customer may require three solutions such as mindset coaching, nutritional help along with physical training.

If this was you niche or industry then you may well provide the nutritional and physical solutions. You may know a mindset coach who cover that aspect. It would be a matter of working collaboratively with the customer.

The point is though if you don’t have the understanding of the customers needs and wants you can’t help.
