What Are The 5 Smart Goals & Why They Are Important

Goal setting is vital for any business, but do you know how to set them? You may have heard of SMART but what are the 5 smart goals?

Hi Trish Davies, here from Build Your AU and TrishDaviesInternational.com. With 2020 coming to an end it is that time to look forward to the next 12 months. I think it is safe to say that 2020 has been one of the most challenging years in modern times.

Covid-19 has brought with it a wave of destruction, personal tragedy, and economic unrest throughout the world. This time last year you may have set your goals for 2020 so it is time to reflect on those and analyse the results.

Hopefully you have had some level of success in achieving your goals in such an adverse situation. What I will say is don’t dwell on things too much as there has been too much going on which is out of your control.

You must look forward with optimism as I feel 2021 will be a great year because of the opportunity that lies ahead. The economic world will gradually get better as the year unfolds and we will get back to a place of some normality.

This is the time to start looking on how you will take you business forward and take your position in the marketplace. How you do that is to set goals that you want to achieve to take your business forward.

Now there is a system to work to help you create and set your goals and that system is called SMART. So, what are the 5 smart goals?

What Are The 5 Smart Goals?

what are the 5 smart goals

The SMART goal system is designed to make you achieve your goals by following a specific formula. At the end of the day anyone can set a goal but unless you have a plan to work to you will probably fail.

What results from that is you have a feeling of never getting anywhere in life. Or you see a gradual improvement but not enough to make an impact which can be very disheartening.

Maybe you feel a sense of drifting through life with jobs or trying to accomplish things with very little effect. The reason for that is that you don’t have any structure behind the thinking of what you want to achieve. This is where the SMART goal system comes into it’s own because it gives you clarity.

Clarity in your ideas which helps to focus your efforts, be productive with your time and resources. Ultimately the SMART goal system increases your chances to achieve what you want to in life.

What you want to achieve personally and what you want to achieve within your business. To make 2021 the year of change. Change in your circumstances, your relationships, your finances, and your business. So, what does SMART stand for?

The SMART Goal System

what are the 5 smart goals

SMART is an acronym which you can use to set your goals. When you set your goals, you should have clarity on your objective to make them reachable. The SMART goal system helps you set goals that follow the following criteria.

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Relevant
  • Time Based

So that is the formula, and this is how to use it!

Specific

The first part of the SMART goal formula is specificity. You must be very specific on what you want to achieve. This is very important as it will focus your mind and efforts. To help you do this you must concentrate on four questions.

  • What is it that you want to achieve?
  • Why is your goal important?
  • Who is involved?
  • Which resources are involved?

Measurable

You must be able to measure your progress so that you can ensure you are on the right road and stay motivated. What this does is keep your focus on the prize and it helps you meet any deadlines you set. Also, as you get closer to achieving your goals it helps build that sense of excitement as you become in touching distance.

Attainable

I would encourage you to set big goals but at the same time you must be realistic. You must stretch yourself to your outer limits and possible beyond but always stay in the realms of possibility.

Relevant

There is no point in setting goals if they don’t mean anything to you. Therefore, your goal must be relevant and is aligned with your life’s purpose. Your goal may also be relevant to the people around you such as your family or the team you have within your business.

Although you may be the figurehead and driving forces you may still need assistance from those people around you. Make sure you include those people but remain in a position of control and leadership.

Time Based

goal deadline

Your goal must have a target date. This is a deadline where you want to achieve your goal. Don’t leave it open ended as this could lead to procrastination. What I would recommend is that you have that overall end date set in stone but have mini target dates incorporated.

This is how you can leverage the second part of the SMART goal formula which is measuring your success. When you meet your mini target dates you can tick them off which gives you a shot in the arm. Give yourself a fist pump as it will give you the motivation to meet the other time-based stamps to achieve the ultimate goal.

Now the SMART goal setting formula can be applied to any aspect of your life that you see fit. To give you more context about goal setting I created a post which focuses on purpose, goals, objectives.

This is the time of year to think about and create your goals for the up coming year. It is something that I and my Build Your AU mastermind members work on. When you have them you have a plan created which you then take action upon. Nothing changes unless you make the change.

You laned on this webpage because you expressed an interest on what are the 5 smart goals. I have given you the formula and other resources to work with. This is your time to create the future you want so please don’t waste this opportunity. Use the information that I have provided to make 2021 the year of change.

Helping you build your authenticity, authority and audience.
